What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics used to be called orthodontia - the word comes from the Greek orthos, meaning "straight, perfect or proper". Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that specializes in treating patients with improper positioning of teeth when the mouth is closed (malocclusion), which results in an improper bite. Orthodontics also includes treating and controlling various aspects of facial growth (dentofacial orthopedics) and the shape and development of the jaw.

An orthodontist will use the orthodontic products as the devices that align and straighten teeth, to correct underbites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw.

The most common orthodontic treatment is braces, which are made of bands, wires and brackets. They gently move teeth into the right position. This can fix the way you bite together. There are different types of braces. The most common are metal or plastic brackets attached to the front surface of the teeth. "Lingual" braces attach to the back of teeth. They are hidden from view but harder to clean.
